Born in Bleanau Gwent, Richard Huw Cole studied composition at Charterhouse School under the RWV composer in residence Patrick Hawes before attending Cardiff and Bristol Universities receiving a Masters degree in music in 2000. Whilst studying he continued to develop his skills under the tuteledge and influence of composers such as Powers, Thomas, Saxton and Pickard. An ardent supporter of the brass band movement, he has performed with and conducted many brass bands and has enjoyed many contest successes at both local and national level.
His works have been performed by ensembles such as the RPO, Music Theatre Wales, Cory, and Faireys Band and have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and S4C. Many of his major works are inspired by the history, myths, and legends of South Wales and the West Country.
